Odour Recognition Tests
What is an
Odour Recognition Test?
The Odour Recognition Test (ORT) is the first key milestone on your NNA scentwork journey. It’s designed to confirm that your dog recognises the target odour and can systematically search through a set of items to locate it, despite distractions.
For non-members who do not wish to compete, you can still chart your progression and test your skills by taking part in ORT’s as a standalone progression.
For the dog, it’s all about clarity and confidence in finding the scent. For the handler, it’s a chance to demonstrate effective line management, controlled pace, and minimal interference during the search.
ORTs are conducted using pattern line-ups of multiple target items - either as individual objects or along designated tracks. Dogs are expected to work on-lead in a clear, methodical pattern and give a distinct, non-damaging indication when they find the scent.
Though it may appear straightforward at first glance, an ORT is a true test of teamwork. As the stages progress, the challenges increase, requiring precision, communication, and trust between you and your dog. It's more than a test - it’s the foundation for everything to come.

The Stages
With 8 progressive stages, the ORT offers the perfect training plan for you and your dog to refine your skills and grow as a scentwork team.
